- Signature tours are operator-designed itineraries with fixed routes and refined detail — efficient, predictable, lower cost. Starting at $2,000 per person.
- Bespoke journeys are built from a blank page around your specific interests, pace, and dates — flexible, customized, higher cost. Starting at $3,999 per person.
- Most first-time China visitors are well-served by a Signature tour. Returning visitors, special-interest travelers, and multi-generational families typically benefit more from Bespoke.
- The actual decision is rarely about budget alone — it's about how much creative input you want in your own trip and how unusual your interests are.
The terms "Signature" and "Bespoke" are used inconsistently across the travel industry, which makes them genuinely confusing when you're comparing operators. At ChinaTourly, these are two distinct product tiers with specific characteristics — and which one suits you depends less on your budget than on what you actually want from the experience.

This guide explains the difference in concrete operational terms, with examples of which traveler benefits from which approach. By the end, you should be able to decide which path to inquire about.
The Working Definitions
Signature Tour — A pre-designed itinerary published by the operator, covering a specific route (Beijing-Xi'an-Shanghai, for example, or Yunnan 8 Days). The route, hotels, guides, and daily structure are decided in advance based on what the operator considers the best version of that route. Small customizations are possible — extending a day in one city, swapping a hotel category, adding a specific workshop — but the core structure is the operator's, not yours.
Bespoke Journey — An itinerary built from a blank page around your specific interests, dates, party composition, and dietary or mobility requirements. There is no published route. The operator interviews you (typically across 2–4 emails and one video call), proposes a draft, you revise, they refine, you confirm. Every element — which cities, which hotels, which specialists you meet, what pace you travel at — is a design decision made with your input.
The distinction matters because the work that goes into each is different. A Signature tour benefits from the operator's repeated refinement of the same route — the third time we run a 6-day Beijing itinerary, we know which restaurant to book for which night and which hutong walk works in which weather. A Bespoke trip benefits from custom thinking — your guide is responding to your stated interests in a way no pre-designed itinerary can.
The Cost Difference and Why It Exists
ChinaTourly Signature Tours start at $2,000 per person. Bespoke Journeys start at $3,999 per person with a 2-traveler minimum.
The gap is not driven primarily by the on-the-ground service difference. The actual experience quality — guide caliber, hotel standard, vehicle class — is comparable between the two tiers at equivalent specifications. The gap is driven by:
- Custom design time. A Bespoke journey requires 8–15 hours of senior staff time to research, draft, revise, and confirm before you arrive. A Signature tour reuses design work already amortized across past clients.
- Bespoke-only specialist access. Some of our specialist relationships — particularly with smaller ICH workshops, private collections, and chefs — are not available on Signature tours because they have limited capacity. Booking these is part of what Bespoke pricing covers.
- Logistics complexity. Bespoke trips often combine cities in unusual sequences or include unusual destinations (Quanzhou, Pingyao, southern Guizhou) that require non-standard arrangements. Each non-standard element adds operator time.
- Schedule flexibility. Bespoke trips can be run on dates we wouldn't otherwise be operating — outside our Signature departure windows — which means dedicated guide and driver assignment rather than aggregation.
For travelers spending $10,000 or more on the trip itself, the $1,000–$2,000 per person Bespoke premium is often worth it for the design control. For travelers operating on a $5,000–$8,000 budget per person, Signature is the better fit and gives you 90% of the experience.
Who Benefits Most from Signature
First-Time China Visitors with Broad Interests
If this is your first China trip and you want to see "the main things" — the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Bund, perhaps the Terracotta Warriors and Yu Garden — you do not need a custom itinerary. Our Signature routes have been refined over multiple iterations and cover these destinations with better daily pacing than most first-time visitors would design for themselves. Most travelers in this category report being delighted by the trip without needing to have made every design decision themselves.
Travelers with Fixed, Standard Dates
If your travel dates align with one of our published Signature departure windows (typically March–April and September–November), and you're flexible within those dates by a few days, Signature pricing reflects the efficiency of operating around predictable timing. October trips that include the Mid-Autumn Festival weekend, for example, are easier to staff and price.
Travelers Who Find Choice Stressful
Some travelers genuinely enjoy designing their own trip. Others find the decision load — which city, which neighborhood, which hotel, which restaurant, which workshop — exhausting and want a competent operator to handle most of it. Signature is structured around that latter group. You answer a short questionnaire, choose between two or three itinerary variants, and the operator handles everything else.
Who Benefits Most from Bespoke
Returning China Visitors
If you've been to China before and done the standard route, a Bespoke journey lets you go deeper into specific regions or themes. Travelers who have already seen Beijing and Shanghai often choose Bespoke for Yunnan, Guizhou, the Silk Road, or southeast coastal Fujian — destinations where the operator-designed Signature routes don't fully exist yet because the audience is smaller.
Special-Interest Travelers
If your trip has a specific theme — Chinese textiles, classical gardens, Song Dynasty porcelain, Buddhist heritage, traditional Chinese medicine, contemporary art, food and tea — Bespoke is the only sensible option. A Signature tour cannot reasonably accommodate the depth that a thematic trip requires. A textile-focused Bespoke journey might combine Suzhou silk workshops, Hangzhou's National Silk Museum, a Hunan Xiang embroidery master, and Guizhou Miao indigo dyeing — a sequence no Signature route covers.
Multi-Generational Families
A family of six — two adults in their forties, two teenagers, two grandparents — has fundamentally different needs than any standard tour group. The grandparents may need slower morning starts and elevator-accessible hotels. The teenagers may need contemporary art and shopping balanced against the historical sites that interest their grandparents. The dietary requirements may include vegetarianism for one person, lactose intolerance for another, halal for a third. A Bespoke journey designed around the family's actual composition consistently produces better results than trying to retrofit a Signature itinerary.
Honeymoon and Anniversary Travelers
For trips with specific personal significance — a 40th anniversary, a honeymoon, a retirement celebration — Bespoke allows for elements that don't appear on standard itineraries: a private dinner on the Great Wall, a calligraphy session with the spouse's name, a hotel room with a specific view, a stop at a place with personal meaning. These are not impossible on Signature trips, but they require Bespoke-level design attention to do well.
Hybrid Approaches
The cleanest categorization is not always the best fit. ChinaTourly also operates two intermediate models:
Customized Signature — Start from a Signature itinerary template, then modify 30–50% of the elements (hotels, restaurants, specific experiences) to fit your interests. Pricing falls between standard Signature and full Bespoke, typically $2,800–$3,500 per person. This is the most popular tier for travelers who want some customization without designing from scratch.
Bespoke Extension — Start with a Signature itinerary for the standard portion of your trip (say, 5 days in Beijing-Shanghai), then add a Bespoke segment for the part that matters most to you (4 days of textile workshops in Yunnan, designed around your interests). This works well for travelers who want the efficiency of Signature for the must-see sites and the depth of Bespoke for the trip's centerpiece.
How to Decide
The clearest path through the decision is to answer four questions honestly:
- Have I been to China before? No → lean Signature. Yes → lean Bespoke.
- Do I have specific interests that go beyond standard tourist sites? No → Signature. Yes → Bespoke.
- Is my travel party size standard (2 adults) or unusual (multi-generational, large group, single traveler with mobility considerations)? Standard → Signature works. Unusual → Bespoke designs around your party.
- Is my budget per person closer to $5,000 or $10,000+? Lower end → Signature. Upper end → Bespoke is worth the design premium.
If three of four answers point to Signature, that's your tier. If three of four point to Bespoke, that's your tier. If you're genuinely split — typical for couples with broad interests but a Bespoke-leaning budget — Customized Signature is usually the right answer.
What the Booking Process Looks Like
Signature: You select an itinerary from our published catalog, confirm dates, indicate hotel category preference, and pay a 30% deposit. Total time from inquiry to confirmation is typically 5–10 business days. We send a confirmation pack within 7 days of deposit covering your full schedule.
Bespoke: You send an inquiry describing your interests, dates, and party. We respond within 24 hours with clarifying questions. Over the following 2–3 weeks, we exchange 4–8 messages (or one video call plus emails), produce a draft itinerary, revise it twice, and confirm a final version. Deposit is paid at final confirmation. Total time from inquiry to confirmation is typically 3–5 weeks.
If your travel dates are within 90 days, we can compress the Bespoke design process if needed, but we don't recommend booking complex Bespoke trips at very short notice — the design quality benefits from time, and high-demand specialists and hotels need lead time.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the on-the-ground experience really the same quality on Signature versus Bespoke?
- Yes — guide caliber, vehicle class, and hotel standards at equivalent specifications are comparable. The difference is in the design intelligence behind the trip, not the daily service quality. A Signature guest staying at the Mandarin Oriental Beijing has the same hotel experience as a Bespoke guest at the Mandarin Oriental Beijing.
- Can I change my mind from Signature to Bespoke after booking?
- Yes, if the request comes more than 60 days before departure. We credit your Signature deposit toward the Bespoke quote and reopen the design conversation. Changes within 60 days are possible but may incur replanning fees if hotel or specialist bookings have to be revised.
- Are there Signature tours for less popular destinations like Guizhou or Fujian?
- Not currently — these regions are exclusively Bespoke at ChinaTourly because the audience is too small to justify pre-designed Signature itineraries. As demand grows, we publish new Signature routes; our Yunnan Signature tour, for example, was originally Bespoke-only before becoming a published route in 2024.
- Do Bespoke prices include international flights?
- No — neither Signature nor Bespoke quotes include international flights to and from China. We can recommend flight options through our partner travel agents but do not book international tickets directly. Visa application costs are also not included. See our full cost breakdown guide for what's typically included and excluded.
- Can I start with a Signature tour and add a private Bespoke extension at the end?
- Yes — this is the Bespoke Extension model described above. It's a common arrangement for travelers who want the efficiency of a curated itinerary for the standard portion of their trip and the depth of custom design for a specific regional or thematic add-on.
