Why October is the strongest single month
October delivers the longest stretch of clear weather across most of China. Beijing's Forbidden City and Mutianyu Wall photograph best in autumn light. Shanghai sees its driest, mildest stretch. Tibet typically gives the clearest Mount Everest views. Jiuzhaigou hits autumn colour peak. Yangcheng Lake hairy crab is mid-October.
The October constraint: October 1-7 National Day Golden Week is the most extreme Chinese domestic tourism period. Hotels triple in price. Major sites overwhelm capacity. We avoid this window in itinerary planning entirely.
October 8-31 is the strongest 24-day window in the Chinese travel calendar. Pre-book 120+ days ahead for Aman-tier hotels and the best Tibet permits. Even Mutianyu Great Wall at 07:00 stays clear of crowds during this post-Golden-Week window.
November first half is underrated — crowd-free, clear weather, less competition. Hairy crab season at Yangcheng Lake continues. Some Tibet weather variability begins late November as winter approaches.
September strengths: hairy crab season starts, Tibet open with strong weather, school holidays ended, business travel slower. The two-week window September 8-21 is the third strongest after October second-half and November first-half.
October 8-31. The strongest 24-day window in the Chinese travel calendar.
