Three visa paths — pick the one that fits

Most 2026 travellers fit one of three paths. Full visa-free 30-day stay (large list of European, ANZ, GCC nationalities). 240-hour transit visa-free (when arriving and departing through different countries). L tourist visa (longer trips, multi-entry, nationalities not on visa-free list). We verify your specific path at inquiry.

Path 1 · Full visa-free 30-day. Direct entry, no application, no paperwork. Citizens of France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Ireland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, Hungary, Poland, Australia, New Zealand, Brunei, UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and 18+ others (full 2026 list provided at inquiry). Maximum 30-day single stay. Tourist, business, transit, visiting purposes allowed. Must arrive at one of 60+ designated ports.

Path 2 · 240-hour transit visa-free. Available to 54 nationalities transiting through China. Onward ticket to a third country required (cannot return to country of origin). Maximum 10 days (240 hours). 60+ entry ports. Restricted travel zones — only the entry province plus adjacent provinces in most cases. Best fit for travellers stopping over en route to elsewhere in Asia.

Path 3 · L tourist visa. Standard tourist visa for nationalities not on the visa-free list, or stays exceeding 30 days, or multi-entry need. Apply at China Visa Application Service Centre (CVASC) in your country 4-8 weeks before departure. Single-entry 30/60/90/180 days or multi-entry. Documents: passport + photo + invitation letter (we provide) + hotel reservations + return ticket.

What changed in 2024-2026

The expansion that makes visa-free workable.

What changed since the pandemic
Visa-free expansion · 2024-2026

What changed since the pandemic

China's visa policy has expanded substantially since late 2024. The 30-day full visa-free list grew from a handful of nationalities to 38+ by 2026. The 240-hour transit visa-free programme expanded from 53 to 60+ entry ports. The application process at CVASC also became faster (10-15 business days standard versus 4-6 weeks pre-pandemic).

Practical implication: most European, ANZ, and GCC travellers no longer need a visa for a standard 11-14 day China trip. Verify your specific nationality status at inquiry — the list has been updated four times since 2024 and may change again.

We verify your nationality's current path at inquiry. We do not charge for visa-related advice.

Honest answers about visa

How do I know which path applies to me?

Verified at inquiry — we check the current 2026 lists against your passport nationality. Most European, ANZ, and GCC travellers are Path 1 (full visa-free). Most North American travellers are Path 3 (L tourist visa) unless on a multi-country Asia trip (Path 2 transit). We confirm and provide documents accordingly.

Can I extend my stay beyond 30 days on Path 1?

No — Path 1 visa-free 30-day is a hard limit. If you need 30+ days, you must use Path 3 (L visa applied 4-8 weeks ahead). We will tell you at inquiry if your planned trip exceeds your visa-free window.

What about Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan?

Hong Kong and Macau have their own immigration regimes — most nationalities enter visa-free for 14-90 days. Taiwan has separate rules. Travel from mainland China to Hong Kong/Macau counts as exiting mainland China (you re-enter on a new visa allowance). Taiwan is fully separate.

Does the TTP cost extra?

Yes — Tibet Travel Permit fee is included in Tibet itinerary pricing. We handle the application on your behalf. Lead time 25+ business days from passport scan submission. Closed to non-Chinese visitors Feb to early April annually (Tibetan New Year).
