Three phases of a China trip — and what to read at each

China travel breaks into three jobs: decide, prepare, verify. This hub indexes the articles that answer each. PLANNING HUBS help you decide direction. BEFORE YOU GO handles the operational prep — visa, transport, money, connectivity, health. PROOF & FIELD NOTES is where real travellers' stories and our specialists' field intel live, so you can verify everything you've read.

Phase 1 · DECIDE (PLANNING HUBS). Five strategic articles plus one when-to-visit calendar. If this is your first China trip, start with the First-Time China Guide. If you know you want China but cannot pick the trip shape, use Design Your Journey or the Destination Decision Guide. If culture is the design driver, the Culture & History Guide ties imperial dynasties, ICH, and contemporary China into one frame. When-to-Visit covers month-by-month weather and the three Golden Weeks to avoid.

Phase 2 · PREPARE (BEFORE YOU GO). Nine operational articles you read in the 60-90 days before departure. Visa (2026 rules for 38+ visa-free nationalities), transport (when high-speed rail beats flights), payments (Alipay setup for non-Chinese passports), connectivity (eSIM vs hotel WiFi vs VPN), health, packing, etiquette.

Phase 3 · VERIFY (PROOF & FIELD NOTES). Real client stories with consent and identifying details preserved. Insider tips from senior guides — the things they would not write in a brochure but tell you privately on day one. The full blog index for everything else.

Decide · Prepare · Verify. Three phases. Eighteen entry points. Pick the column that matches where you are.

If this is your first China trip — read this first

The First-Time China Guide takes you through the five strategic decisions that determine whether your trip works: when to go (April-May or September-October are the strongest windows), how long to stay (8-14 days is the sweet spot), where to base (Beijing + Shanghai + one third city), how to choose between Signature and Bespoke, and what to book first (Forbidden City tickets, Tibet Travel Permits, October hotel inventory).

Average reading time: 12 minutes. Action time after reading: 30-60 minutes to book your first hotel.

Updated 2026 — covers post-pandemic visa-free transit changes and 2026 site ticketing systems.

Honest answers before you start

Which guide should I read first?

If this is your first China trip: First-Time China Guide, then When to Visit China to pick dates. If you have dates but no destination: Destination Decision Guide. If you want to understand the cultural frame before booking: Culture & History Guide. If you're 30 days from departure: Visa Guide + Transport in China + Payments & Money + WiFi & Communication.

What's the difference between PLANNING HUBS and BEFORE YOU GO?

PLANNING HUBS answer 'what trip should I take?' BEFORE YOU GO answer 'how do I prepare the trip I've already chosen?' Most travellers read PLANNING in the 90-180 days before departure when deciding shape, and BEFORE YOU GO in the 30-60 days before departure when preparing operationally.

Are Real Travel Stories anonymised?

No — Real Travel Stories preserve names, dates, and identifying details with explicit client consent. We use only what each client signed off on. This is intentional: anonymised testimonials are not credible. We err on the side of fewer stories at higher trust.

How often is this guide updated?

Quarterly review of all guides. Material updates (visa rule changes, site ticketing changes, festival date shifts) are pushed within 14 days of source verification. Each guide carries an 'Updated' date stamp.
