Three connectivity strategies — pick before arriving
The Great Firewall blocks most western apps. You need a strategy to access Gmail, WhatsApp, Google Maps, Instagram, and other services. Three options work. International eSIM is the cleanest. Chinese SIM + VPN works but VPN must be installed before arriving China (the app stores in China don't carry VPN apps). Hotel WiFi + VPN is the third option but mobile data outside the hotel is harder.
Strategy 1 · International eSIM (recommended). Buy from Airalo, Holafly, or similar at home before departure. 5-30 day plans cost USD 20-60 for 5-20 GB. Data routes outside China automatically (the carrier is non-Chinese). Google Maps, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube all work. No VPN needed. Speed slightly lower than Chinese SIM but acceptable.
Strategy 2 · Chinese SIM + VPN. Buy China Unicom or China Mobile SIM at airport on arrival (200-300 RMB for 30 days unlimited 5G). Activate. But your VPN app must be installed BEFORE you arrive China — the Chinese app stores don't carry VPN apps. Recommended VPNs that work in 2026: ExpressVPN, Astrill, LetsVPN, NordVPN (variable success). Test VPN before departure.
Strategy 3 · Hotel WiFi + VPN. All major hotels offer fast WiFi. Most also offer 'international internet' that bypasses the GFW for guests (selling point of international hotel chains). Outside the hotel you'd need data via Strategy 1 or 2 anyway.
The VPN install rule. Install your VPN app and confirm it works before leaving home. The most common traveller failure is arriving China and discovering the VPN app cannot be downloaded from inside China. ExpressVPN, Astrill, LetsVPN are the most reliable 2026 options. Test before departure.
International eSIM is the cleanest strategy. Install your VPN before leaving home if going the Chinese-SIM route.
