15+ days: when one country becomes three

Above 14 days, a China trip stops being about a region and starts being about the country. Three weeks lets you do imperial north + ethnic southwest + plateau west with breathing room. Four weeks lets you do the full Eight Cuisines or the Buddhist art chronology end-to-end. The mode of travel for clients who came to actually understand China.

Why most 15+ day clients design Bespoke rather than Signature

Below 14 days, our published Signature itineraries fit most travellers cleanly. Above 14 days, individual interests diverge enough that Bespoke design produces better results. The traveller who wants three weeks for textile-craft depth across Suzhou-Hangzhou-Yunnan-Guizhou has very different needs from the traveller who wants three weeks for high-altitude expedition Tibet-Sichuan borderlands-Northwest. Bespoke lets each be its best version.

What 15+ days lets you do that 14 cannot:

  • Three regions properly. Beijing 5 + Xi'an 4 + Yunnan 8 = 17 days. Or Shanghai 4 + Silk Road 12 + Tibet 6 = 22 days. Each region gets the days it deserves.
  • Deep theme exploration. Eight Cuisines tour 21 days. Buddhist art chronology with Tibet leg 24 days. Imperial heritage from Qin through Qing 28 days.
  • Slow travel. Three weeks at family-friendly multi-gen pace. Or three weeks for senior travellers with mid-day rest schedules and accessible accommodations throughout.
  • Honeymoon and special-occasion depth. Three weeks with each region's centerpiece moments planned around your specific interests — a Mongolian Yurt night, a Yangtze cruise, a Tibet monastery overnight, a Hangzhou tea harvest morning.

Why we recommend Bespoke for most 15+ day trips:

  • Each traveller's three regions are a different combination — you should pick yours, not work from our published shortlist.
  • Pacing across 3+ weeks needs to respect your specific work and travel history (jet lag, prior recent trips, current fitness, dietary requirements that compound over weeks).
  • Logistics complexity (4+ internal flights, multiple region permits, suitable hotel categories in each of 5+ cities) benefits from custom design rather than template application.

Our Bespoke Journeys start at $3,999 per person with a 2-traveller minimum. See Bespoke options or send us an inquiry with your dates and the three regions you want to combine.

Above 14 days, individual interests diverge enough that Bespoke design produces better results than any template.

Four common situations

Match a situation to a recommendation.

If

First 15+ day China trip

Best pick Classic Grand Tour 18 days

Beijing 5 + Xi'an 4 + Yunnan 7 + Shanghai 2. Four regions, every essential, breathing room.

Also consider: Substitute Sichuan for Yunnan if food is priority.

Watch out: 18 days requires 2 acclimatisation buffers (start, mid-trip).

If

Specific theme drives the trip

Best pick Bespoke 21-28 days

Pick your theme: Eight Cuisines, Buddhist art chronology, imperial heritage, traditional crafts, Silk Road + Tibet.

Also consider: Themed 21-day trips need 3-5 weeks of design lead time.

Watch out: Bespoke pricing from $3,999 per person.

If

Honeymoon or special anniversary

Best pick Bespoke 16-18 days

Three regions with each centerpiece moment hand-selected. Private dinner on the Great Wall. Calligraphy with the spouse's name. Hotel room with specific view.

Also consider: Discuss specific significance at inquiry stage.

Watch out: These elements require 6+ weeks lead time.

If

Multi-gen 3-4 generations

Best pick Multi-Gen Extended 18 days

Beijing imperial paced for grandparents, Shanghai for teenagers, Lijiang for slow recovery. Mid-day rest every day.

Also consider: Add Hong Kong for the family teenager appeal.

Watch out: Hotel rooms with adjoining options across all cities.

Sequencing that needs the length

An altitude-aware example only possible above 14 days.

Arriving at Lhasa mid-trip, fully acclimatised
Lhasa · day 14 of 22

Arriving at Lhasa mid-trip, fully acclimatised

A 22-day Silk Road + Tibet trip puts Lhasa on day 14 rather than day 1. By that point you have already moved through moderate altitude at Xining (2,275m) and Qinghai Lake (3,200m). Your body arrives in Lhasa (3,656m) acclimatised, your Tibet days are stronger, and the trip's energy curve respects altitude honestly.

Shorter trips cannot do this. The 15+ day window is when proper altitude pacing becomes possible.

Standard Lhasa altitude protocol still applies on arrival days.

Honest answers before you commit

Why are most 15+ day routes Bespoke rather than Signature?

Above 14 days, traveller interests diverge enough that template itineraries lose efficiency. The 21-day textile-craft traveller and the 21-day Buddhist art traveller need entirely different cities, hotels, and specialist contacts. Bespoke design produces better results per dollar at this length, even with the design fee.

What's the lead time for Bespoke 15+ day trips?

Standard Bespoke design is 3-5 weeks from inquiry to confirmation. For trips above 18 days with multiple specialist arrangements (named-master workshops, Tibet permits, Mogao academic tour, hairy crab season meals), allow 6-8 weeks. We can compress for last-minute bookings but the design quality benefits from time.

Is altitude management really workable in a 22-day trip?

Yes if sequenced correctly. We typically start at sea level (Shanghai or Beijing), introduce moderate altitude mid-trip (Xining 2,275m, Lhasa 3,656m), and conclude at sea level. The trip's altitude curve respects acclimatisation, with at least 2 days buffer at each elevation increase. Cardiopulmonary considerations require physician sign-off.

Can grandparents handle 18+ days?

Yes, with intelligent pacing. The Multi-Gen Extended 18-day format builds in mid-day rest, accessible hotels in each city, boat-based alternatives to walking (West Lake, Suzhou gardens, Yangtze), and family-friendly local guides. Couples in their 70s have completed this itinerary successfully.

What about laundry, work calls, and the practical side of three-week trips?

Most hotels we use have same-day laundry (¥80-150 per load). Time-zone scheduling for work calls is something we can plan into the itinerary on request — typically late-night China time aligns with US morning. Reliable WiFi in all hotels; international plan or eSIM recommended. We brief on these at confirmation.

How much should I budget for a 21-day private trip?

Bespoke 21-day trips typically run $10,000-$18,000 per person for the on-the-ground costs (excluding international flights, insurance, visa). At the upper end, this includes Aman-tier hotels throughout and the highest specialist access. At entry, it includes 5-star hotels and senior generalist guides. See our cost breakdown guide.
