Five packing axes — adjust by season and route

Layered clothing handles most seasons. UV protection matters more than most travellers expect (Tibet, summer everywhere). Comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable. Modest evening wear for restaurant anchors. Specialty kit for Tibet altitude, Harbin sub-zero, summer humidity.

Axis 1 · Layered base. Merino wool or synthetic base layers (long sleeve and short sleeve). Light insulating mid-layer (fleece or down vest). Wind/rain shell. Layers handle temperature variation between days and within days. Works across seasons.

Axis 2 · UV protection. Tibet has the highest UV intensity in China (high altitude + thin atmosphere). SPF 50+ sunscreen mandatory. Wide-brim hat. UV-protective sunglasses. Long-sleeve UPF shirt for full-day Tibet exposure. Summer Yangtze cities also high UV.

Axis 3 · Walking shoes. Comfortable walking shoes are the single most important item. Forbidden City alone covers 7-8 km on cobblestones. Mutianyu Wall involves stairs at incline. Hutong walks add 2-3 km. Test new shoes at home — never buy walking shoes specifically for the trip.

Axis 4 · Restaurant-formal evening kit. Anchor restaurants and Aman-tier hotel evening dining trend smart-casual to formal. One smart shirt or blouse + smart trousers/skirt is enough. Not formal-formal, but better than tour-traveller athletic wear.

Axis 5 · Specialty by destination. Tibet adds Diamox + altitude awareness. Harbin January adds -25°C arctic-grade insulation. Summer Yangtze cities add humidity-friendly breathable fabrics. Rural Yunnan adds insect repellent.

Comfortable walking shoes are the single most important item. Test at home, not on the Forbidden City cobblestones.

Four common packing decisions

Match a trip type to a kit.

If

Standard 11-day Beijing-Xi'an-Shanghai spring/autumn

Best pick Universal kit (Axes 1-4)

Layered base + light shell + walking shoes + restaurant-formal evening kit + UV protection. No specialty add-on needed. 23 kg total carry.

Also consider: Soft-shell suitcase under 80 cm for rail compatibility.

Watch out: Layered clothing handles temperature variation.

If

Tibet trip including Lhasa

Best pick Universal kit + Tibet specialty (Axis 5a)

Diamox in original packaging. Arctic-grade jacket rated to -10°C even in summer (cold nights). UPF 50+ shirt. SPF 50+ sunscreen. Wide-brim hat. Layered for 10-22°C day-night variation.

Also consider: Coca leaf tea / oxygen pillows for extra altitude support.

Watch out: Hydration bottle 1+ litre capacity.

If

Harbin Ice Festival January

Best pick Arctic-grade specialty (Axis 5b)

Insulated jacket rated -25°C. Base layers (merino or synthetic) head-to-toe. Insulated boots rated -20°C. Hand warmers + neck gaiter + thick beanie. Layered everything.

Also consider: Festival expects this — warming shelters spaced throughout venues.

Watch out: Test arctic kit at home in winter before relying on it.

Tibet packing — the hardest brief

What altitude UV actually requires.

Tibet packing · The hardest packing brief

What Tibet altitude requires that travellers forget

Tibet has the highest UV intensity in China (high altitude + thin atmosphere). Travellers who skip serious UV protection get severe sunburn within 1-2 days, sometimes requiring trip changes. Wide-brim hat. SPF 50+ sunscreen reapplied 2x daily. UPF 50+ long-sleeve shirt for full-day exposure. UV-protective sunglasses.

The other Tibet packing reality: temperature variation. Day 18-22°C, night 8-12°C, monastery interiors cold and damp. Layered clothing — base + insulating mid-layer + wind/rain shell — handles the range. Diamox in original prescription packaging avoids customs questions.

Tibet packing: UV + layers + Diamox + hydration. Don't forget UPF clothing.

Honest answers about packing

How much luggage can I bring?

High-speed rail: 20 kg per passenger + one hand bag. International flight: 23 kg checked standard. Soft-shell suitcase under 80 cm width for rail compartment compatibility. We recommend total trip pack at or under 18 kg for ease of moving between cities.

Do I really need restaurant-formal clothing?

Smart-casual yes — strictly formal no. Anchor restaurants at five-star hotels and Aman-tier properties expect smart-casual. One smart shirt/blouse + smart trousers/skirt covers all evening anchors. Athletic wear or jeans at evening dinner anchors looks out of place.

Will I need rain gear?

Compact umbrella or light rain shell for spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October). Summer south is rainy season — heavier rain gear. Tibet rain is unusual but cold when it happens. Skip bulky rainwear; layered shell strategy works.

Should I bring power adapters?

Yes — China uses three-prong plugs (Type I, same as Australia/Argentina). Universal travel adapter covers it. Most modern hotels also have USB-C outlets at bedside. Voltage 220V — your laptop/phone chargers handle it. Hair dryers and other 110V appliances do not.
