Five packing axes — adjust by season and route
Layered clothing handles most seasons. UV protection matters more than most travellers expect (Tibet, summer everywhere). Comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable. Modest evening wear for restaurant anchors. Specialty kit for Tibet altitude, Harbin sub-zero, summer humidity.
Axis 1 · Layered base. Merino wool or synthetic base layers (long sleeve and short sleeve). Light insulating mid-layer (fleece or down vest). Wind/rain shell. Layers handle temperature variation between days and within days. Works across seasons.
Axis 2 · UV protection. Tibet has the highest UV intensity in China (high altitude + thin atmosphere). SPF 50+ sunscreen mandatory. Wide-brim hat. UV-protective sunglasses. Long-sleeve UPF shirt for full-day Tibet exposure. Summer Yangtze cities also high UV.
Axis 3 · Walking shoes. Comfortable walking shoes are the single most important item. Forbidden City alone covers 7-8 km on cobblestones. Mutianyu Wall involves stairs at incline. Hutong walks add 2-3 km. Test new shoes at home — never buy walking shoes specifically for the trip.
Axis 4 · Restaurant-formal evening kit. Anchor restaurants and Aman-tier hotel evening dining trend smart-casual to formal. One smart shirt or blouse + smart trousers/skirt is enough. Not formal-formal, but better than tour-traveller athletic wear.
Axis 5 · Specialty by destination. Tibet adds Diamox + altitude awareness. Harbin January adds -25°C arctic-grade insulation. Summer Yangtze cities add humidity-friendly breathable fabrics. Rural Yunnan adds insect repellent.
Comfortable walking shoes are the single most important item. Test at home, not on the Forbidden City cobblestones.
