Six steps from download to payment-ready
Set up before departure so you have time to complete identity checks, card linking, and any issuer verification. App wording and requirements can change, so follow the current prompts in your version of Alipay.
Step 1 · Download Alipay. Use the official iOS App Store or Google Play listing, then select a language supported by your current app version.
Step 2 · Register an account. Follow the current in-app prompts using your overseas or Chinese mobile phone number.
Step 3 · Complete identity verification. Keep your passport available and follow the exact document and selfie prompts shown in the app; requirements and review time can vary.
Step 4 · Open payment methods. Use the current Bank Cards or payment-method menu shown in your version of Alipay. Menu wording can change between versions.
Step 5 · Link an eligible international card. Enter the requested card details and complete any issuer verification. Supported card brands, issuer approval, fees, and limits vary, so the app and card issuer remain authoritative.
Step 6 · Make a small payment test. Scan a merchant QR code or present your payment code, review the amount and any displayed fee, then confirm. Keep a physical card and RMB cash as backup.
Do this before you leave home. First-day China without payment app is friction.
