Six steps from download to payment-ready

Most setup failures happen at step 3 (passport verification) or step 5 (foreign card linking). The full process is straightforward but each step matters in order. Do this before you leave home — first-day China without payment app is friction.

Step 1 · Download Alipay (10 MB). iOS App Store / Google Play Store. The app is called 'Alipay' (English in international versions). Open and choose 'I am a tourist' or 'International user' at first launch screen.

Step 2 · Register account. Use your country phone number (any country accepted; SMS verification arrives within 1 minute). Set 6-digit PIN. Enable Face ID/Touch ID. Account language: English.

Step 3 · Verify with passport. Tap menu → Settings → Verify Identity → Passport. Scan passport photo page. Scan passport bio data page. Selfie verification (look at camera 2 seconds). Approval usually 5-30 minutes. This step blocks the most users — if rejected, ensure passport in good condition and well-lit photo.

Step 4 · Activate Tour Card. Once verified, menu → Tour Card → Activate. Tour Card is the international travel wallet shell that holds your funds and links to your foreign cards.

Step 5 · Link foreign card. Tour Card → Add payment method → Credit/debit card. Enter Visa/Mastercard details. Some cards need 3D-Secure verification (SMS code from issuing bank). Once verified, card is ready.

Step 6 · Make first payment test. Once you arrive China, scan any merchant QR code with Alipay. First transaction may need additional verification SMS. After first transaction, all subsequent QR-code payments are smooth.

Do this before you leave home. First-day China without payment app is friction.

Four common failure points and recoveries

What to do when a step fails.

If

Passport verification fails (Step 3)

Best pick Re-try with better lighting and surface

Most Step 3 failures are passport-photo image quality. Use white background, natural light, lay passport flat. Some passports with reflective laminate fail repeatedly — try at angle.

Also consider: If repeated failure, try WeChat Pay as backup.

Watch out: Some passport types (e-passports with chip) work better than older paper passports.

If

Foreign card link fails (Step 5)

Best pick Check 3D-Secure SMS arrival

Most Step 5 failures are 3D-Secure SMS not arriving. Ensure issuing bank knows you're travelling China (call them before departure if necessary). Try a different card (Mastercard sometimes works when Visa doesn't, and vice versa).

Also consider: Some bank cards block international wallet links — ask issuer.

Watch out: Have a backup card ready.

If

Tour Card not appearing in menu

Best pick Re-verify passport via Settings

Tour Card appears only after passport verification completes. If passport status shows 'pending', wait or re-submit. If 'verified' but no Tour Card menu item, force-close and reopen app.

Also consider: Some regional versions of Alipay use different menu labels.

Watch out: WeChat Pay is the backup if Alipay fails entirely.

What every payment feels like

Once set up, China is invisible.

Once set up, this is what every payment feels like
The 60-second QR-pay experience

Once set up, this is what every payment feels like

Walk into a restaurant. Order. Bill arrives. Server gestures at the QR code on the table. Open Alipay. Tap 'Pay'. Camera opens. Point at QR code. Confirm amount. Face ID. Done. Six seconds.

The entire urban Chinese economy operates this way. Taxi drivers, food stalls, museum entrances, calligraphy supplies, temple incense, train station snacks. After your first 2-3 transactions, the rhythm becomes automatic. Travellers who set this up pre-trip describe it as 'invisible' — they stop thinking about payments.

Setup matters. Once done, China feels frictionless. Without it, every transaction is a 5-minute negotiation.

Step 3 · most failure-prone

Lighting + surface

Most failures are image quality. White paper background, natural daylight, lay passport flat, both photo page and bio page captured clearly. Selfie verification: look directly at camera 2 seconds. Reflective passport laminate sometimes fails — try angle.

  • White background
  • Natural light
  • Lay flat — no holding
Foreign card linking

Step 5 · 3D-Secure required

Bank notification

Issuing bank must allow international wallet integration. Some banks (especially smaller credit unions) block by default. Call your bank before travel to enable China travel — they will note your destination dates. Have backup card ready.

  • Notify bank before travel
  • 3D-Secure SMS required
  • Backup card ready
First-transaction quirks

May need extra SMS

Smooth thereafter

Your first in-China Alipay transaction may trigger one additional verification SMS from your bank. After confirming, all subsequent payments are smooth. We recommend first payment at a controlled moment (hotel concierge, restaurant with English-speaking staff) not at a taxi or street stall.

  • Extra SMS first transaction
  • Smooth thereafter
  • First payment in controlled context

Honest answers about Alipay setup

Can I set up Alipay after I arrive instead of before?

Technically yes, but you'll have first-day friction without payment app. Hotels work without it (credit card), but taxis, lunch spots, museum entrances, the first cultural site all involve negotiation. Strongly recommend setting up at home in the 7-14 days before departure.

What if I can't get past Step 3 passport verification?

Try better lighting and a different surface. If still failing, try WeChat Pay as backup (similar functionality, sometimes accepts passports Alipay rejects). If both fail, you'll rely on credit card + cash — still workable but more friction. We brief alternatives at inquiry.

How much does the 3% conversion fee actually cost on a trip?

On a typical 12-day China trip spending RMB 3,000-5,000 via Alipay (the rest on credit card and pre-paid via ChinaTourly), the 3% fee is RMB 90-150 — about USD 13-21. Less than most currency exchange counter spreads.

Do I need a Chinese phone number for Alipay?

No — Alipay International Travel Pass works with any country phone number. SMS verification arrives at your home country number. No Chinese SIM card required for app function (you do need data — see /pages/wifi-vpn-esim).
