Private inbound travel that supports heritage, not extracts it

Tourism done badly erodes the cultures it celebrates. Tourism done well — at small scale, at right price, with direct supplier relationships — supports practitioners who would otherwise lose their craft. ChinaTourly's sustainability commitment is operational, not slogan: we pay master inheritors directly at rates that preserve their practice, we cap group sizes to protect sites, and we eliminate the extractive middlemen that erode community benefit.

Pledge

Three operational commitments — verifiable, not branding

We don't sell sustainability as a marketing line. We commit operationally to three things every booking honours: direct payment to local suppliers at rates that respect their practice, small private group sizes that protect cultural sites, and an annual public community report. This page explains the specifics.

Commitment 1 · Direct payment, above-market rates. ICH master sessions on our routes pay the master directly — not through a Western intermediary or a Chinese tour-bus operator. The session rate is set above local market rate to recognise that master practice is rare, irreplaceable, and undercompensated. Master Yao (Suzhou silk), Master Qi (West Lake Longjing), Master Wang (Jingdezhen porcelain) all receive direct payment + repeat bookings.

Commitment 2 · Small private group sizes. Every ChinaTourly journey is private — no group departures, no group-tour bus stops at popular sites. Our maximum party size is 12 (extended family milestone scenarios); typical party is 2-6. This protects sites like Jiuzhaigou alpine pools and Mogao Caves Tang-dynasty murals from the over-tourism damage that group-bus operators cause.

Commitment 3 · Community report annually. Each calendar year we publish a transparent report of how booking revenue flowed to local suppliers and master inheritors. First report due Q1 2027 covering 2026 calendar year.

Why direct payment matters

ICH master economics.

Why direct payment above market rate matters
ICH master economics

Why direct payment above market rate matters

Most ICH master sessions on the tourist circuit are routed through intermediaries — tour-bus operators, hotel concierge desks, or commission-driven freelance guides. A typical chain takes 40-70% of the session fee before it reaches the master. Master inheritors of Chinese intangible cultural heritage — Su-style silk embroidery, Longjing tea, Jingdezhen porcelain, Mei-school Peking Opera, Tang-tradition calligraphy — are paid systematically below what their practice deserves.

ChinaTourly pays masters directly at rates set above local-market. We also book repeat sessions — Master Wang at Meijiawu has hosted 18 ChinaTourly groups in 2025-2026. The repeat-booking economic stability lets master inheritors invest in training the next generation. This is the difference between tourism that extracts heritage and tourism that preserves it.

Master session fee structure transparent on request. Annual community report (Q1 2027) will publish aggregate revenue flow to master inheritors.

ICH masters

Master Yao Jianping (Su Embroidery), Master Qi Guowei (West Lake Longjing), Master Wang Xijiu (Jingdezhen Porcelain), Mei-school Peking Opera training school, Tang calligraphy researcher Wang Cheng — all receive direct payment + repeat bookings + multi-year retainer where structure allows.

Site protection

We do not offer group departures. Maximum party size 12 (for extended-family milestone scenarios). Typical party 2-6. This protects sensitive sites like Jiuzhaigou Y-shaped alpine valley, Mogao Caves Tang-dynasty murals, Forbidden City quota-restricted galleries, from over-tourism damage.

  • Max 12 per party
  • Typical 2-6
  • No group departures
Local hotel preference

Boutique heritage where comparable

Local economy

Where local operators offer comparable quality (Aman Summer Palace at Yiheyuan, Amanyangyun outside Shanghai, Naxi courtyard inns Lijiang, Wuyi Mountain tea-estate stays), we preferentially book local-operator properties over Western-chain equivalents. Local economic flow matters at the booking decision.

Carbon footprint discipline

Rail over short flights · Offset from 2026 Q2

Transport

Where high-speed rail is competitive (Beijing-Shanghai, Beijing-Xi'an, Shanghai-Wuhan), we book G-train business class over short-haul flight. This reduces per-trip carbon by ~70%. From Q2 2026, all international-arrival bookings include carbon-offset option at checkout.

  • Rail prioritised under 1,500 km
  • Q2 2026 offset checkout
  • Per-trip transport disclosure

Honest answers about sustainability

Will the first community report show actual dollar amounts?

Yes — aggregate revenue flow to ICH master inheritors, local hotel operators, ethnic-minority village hosts, and Tibetan dispatch teams. We won't publish individual master payment amounts for privacy; we will publish aggregate flow + percentage of trip cost reaching local suppliers.

Why not group tours if they generate more revenue for sites?

Group tours generate revenue but extract value — the bus operator and the commission chain take most of it before it reaches local suppliers. Private travel at higher per-traveller pricing actually flows more dollars to local suppliers + masters per traveller than group tours do. We have the math.

Are you carbon-neutral?

No, and we won't claim to be. We discipline internal-rail over short flights (saves ~70% per trip). From Q2 2026 we offer carbon offset at checkout (Verra/Gold Standard credits). We disclose per-trip carbon estimates in route documentation. Honest disclosure over false claims.

How do I verify your direct supplier payments?

We invite verification. The 2026 community report (publishing Q1 2027) will be audited by an independent Tianjin-based audit firm. Specific master inheritors can be contacted directly via the introductions our Bespoke clients have established.
