Getting around China: rail, flight, private car

China's transport infrastructure is exceptional — 46,000+ km of high-speed rail (350 km/h), the world's most extensive internal flight network, and well-maintained expressways for private-car transfer. The question is not 'how to get there' but 'which mode for which leg.' This guide gives the operating rules.

Three modes, three operating rules

High-speed rail is the default for legs under 1,500 km. Internal flight is the default for legs over 1,500 km or when crossing unconnected regions. Private car is for in-city transfer, day-trips from a base, and Tibet (where private vehicle is mandatory). Choosing the wrong mode adds 2-4 hours per leg.

Rule 1 · Rail for under 1,500 km. Beijing-Shanghai (1,318 km): 4-4.5 hours by G-train, beats flight when including airport time. Shanghai-Hangzhou (172 km): 45 minutes. Beijing-Xi'an (1,200 km): 4.5 hours. G-trains run 06:00 to 23:00 daily, typically 30+ services per day on major routes. First-class and business-class compartments available — we book business-class on most itineraries.

Rule 2 · Flight for 1,500+ km or unconnected regions. Beijing-Chengdu (1,800 km): 3-hour flight beats overnight rail. Shanghai-Lhasa (3,000+ km): 5.5-hour flight (no rail option until Sichuan-Tibet line opens). Beijing-Kashgar (3,500 km): 5-hour flight, the only realistic option. Internal flights book 30-90 days ahead for best pricing.

Rule 3 · Private car for in-city + day-trips + Tibet. Every transfer on our routes is private — airport to hotel, hotel to site, site to site, hotel to station. Tibet requires private vehicle with permitted driver throughout (TTP regulation). For day-trips from a base (Beijing to Mutianyu, Shanghai to Suzhou, Chengdu to Mount Emei) private car beats public transport by 1-2 hours per leg.

High-speed rail under 1,500 km. Flight over 1,500 km. Private car everywhere else.

Four common transport decisions

Match the leg to the mode.

If

Beijing-Shanghai leg on 11-day classic

Best pick G-train business class 4-4.5h

Beijing South Railway Station to Shanghai Hongqiao. Business class private 1+2 seating. Includes meal service. Beats flight when airport-to-airport time is counted.

Also consider: We book 60+ days ahead for time-window control.

Watch out: Confirm passport name spelling exactly matches ticket at booking.

If

Beijing-Chengdu leg for Sichuan extension

Best pick Internal flight 3h

Multiple daily Air China and Sichuan Airlines services. 3-hour flight + 1-hour each side = 5 hours total versus 7.5 hours direct rail.

Also consider: Internal flight pricing fluctuates — book 30-60 days ahead.

Watch out: Chengdu Tianfu (TFU) is newer; Shuangliu (CTU) closer to city centre.

If

Day-trip from Beijing to Mutianyu Great Wall

Best pick Private car with driver

60-90 minute drive each way. We arrange 06:00 departure for 07:30 wall arrival (empty wall window).

Also consider: Public bus from Beijing reaches Mutianyu but adds 90+ minutes each way.

Watch out: Worth the private-car premium for the 07:00 arrival timing.

If

City centre to airport, 45+ minutes, with luggage

Best pick Pre-booked private transfer

Fixed price, an English-speaking driver and help with bags beats a metro change or an arrival-day taxi-app language barrier.

Also consider: Didi (app set up in advance) for short daytime hops.

Watch out: Build in rush hour — Beijing and Shanghai airport runs can double in traffic.

Why business-class G-train as default

Why we book business-class G-train as the default

The Beijing-Shanghai G-train is one of the great travel experiences of contemporary China. 4-4.5 hours at 350 km/h through Jiangsu countryside. Business-class compartments seat 1+2 with full reclining seats and meal service. The window views — high-rise satellite cities, agricultural Jiangsu, Yangtze crossing, Suzhou suburbs — are themselves cultural context.

For comparable distances Beijing-Xi'an and Shanghai-Wuhan, we book business-class as default. Cost premium over second-class is meaningful but the comfort, the carry-on space, and the 1+2 seating make it a different experience.

Booking opens 15 days ahead. We handle booking as part of every itinerary including the leg.

Four operational rules

Each rule with execution notes.

Rail booking window

15 days advance only

Operational rule

China rail tickets release 15 days before departure. We book at the release moment for time-of-day control. Tickets for popular times (Friday evening, holiday weekends, Spring Festival) sell out within hours.

  • 15-day release window
  • Business class books fast
  • Passport name must match exactly
Internal flight booking

30-90 days for best price

Operational rule

Internal flights price-tier by booking lead. 60+ days ahead delivers consistent business-class pricing. Last-minute domestic flight prices in China can spike 3-4x.

  • 30-90 day booking window
  • Air China + China Eastern + China Southern
  • Business class meaningful 3+ hours
Private car standards

Senior driver + sedan/SUV

What we provide

All transfers on our routes are private. Senior drivers (5+ years experience). Mercedes-Benz V-class or Toyota Alphard for parties of 3+. Sedan (Volvo S90 or Mercedes E-class) for couples and solo. Drivers are not guides — guides ride along.

  • Mercedes V-class / Alphard
  • Senior driver 5+ years
  • Guide rides with driver
ID rules

Carry your passport on every leg

Train tickets, domestic flights and most intercity transfers are tied to your passport, and the name must match exactly. You will show it at security, boarding and hotel check-in. Keep it on you — do not pack it in a checked bag.

  • Name must match exactly
  • Shown at every checkpoint
  • Never pack in checked bags

Honest answers about transport

Should I rent a car in China?

No — international driving permits are not honoured. Foreign tourists cannot rent self-drive cars in China. The infrastructure also assumes Chinese-language navigation and signage. Private car with senior driver is the only realistic option, and is included on every ChinaTourly route.

Are high-speed trains really better than flying?

For legs under 1,500 km — yes, in our experience consistently. Beijing-Shanghai is the canonical example: 4-4.5 hours station-to-station versus 4-5 hours total flight time when airport transfer + security + boarding + taxi-on-arrival are counted. The train delivers more usable time.

How do I book G-train tickets ourselves?

China Railway 12306 app is the official channel, but it requires Chinese mobile registration and ID verification that complicates foreign-passport booking. We handle all rail booking as part of itinerary preparation — included in every route with a rail leg.

What about driving Tibet myself?

Not permitted — Tibet Autonomous Region regulation requires permitted Tibetan driver and Tibetan guide throughout. Private 4x4 vehicle is provided as part of every Tibet itinerary. No self-drive option exists.
