Domestic Flights in China

China's domestic aviation network is vast and efficient. Here's how to book, what to expect, and which airports to know.

China has over 250 commercial airports, connecting cities that even high-speed rail doesn't reach efficiently. For distances above 1,000 km — especially to remote regions like Tibet, Xinjiang, or Yunnan — flying is often the most practical option.

Major Domestic Airlines

  • Air China — premium, extensive network
  • China Eastern — Shanghai hub, good reliability
  • China Southern — Guangzhou hub, largest fleet
  • Hainan Airlines — often rated best for service
  • Shenzhen Airlines, Xiamen Air — regional specialists
  • Budget: Spring, West Air, Nine Air

Key Routes & Times

  • Beijing–Shanghai: 2h15m (vs 5h35m on rail)
  • Beijing–Chengdu: 2h45m
  • Beijing–Lhasa (Tibet): 3h15m (only way in, no rail)
  • Shanghai–Kunming: 3h
  • Guangzhou–Urumqi: 5h
  • Chengdu–Zhangjiajie: 2h

Booking Tips

  • Book on Trip.com, Ctrip, or Qunar (English available)
  • Carry-on: 5–7kg (strictly enforced at security)
  • Airport check-in: arrive 2h before domestic flight
  • Passport required (not just ID for foreigners)
  • Baggage claim: domestic and international use same process
  • Internal flight delays: very common — build buffer time

ChinaTourly Advice

For Tibet specifically, all foreign travellers must fly — no direct road connection exists without a Tibet Permit. We arrange permits and book domestic flights as part of every Tibet itinerary, handling the coordination that typically confuses first-time visitors.
