Travel Conditions
China travel conditions are generally excellent for international tourists. Infrastructure is world-class, crime rates are low, and the country is eager to welcome international visitors following the post-pandemic reopening. Some regions have specific considerations that require advance planning.
Entry & Visa Status (2026)
- Visa-free access expanded to 50+ countries
- Standard tourist visa processing: normal 4–7 days
- Tibet: foreign tourist permit required — apply through tour operator
- Xinjiang: no formal restriction but extra scrutiny at checkpoints
- No health-related entry restrictions currently in place
- eVisa available for eligible nationals — fully online process
Regional Considerations

- Xinjiang: border area restrictions; photography limitations near military sites
- Hong Kong / Macau: separate visa policy from mainland China
- Taiwan: not accessible from mainland China via regular tourism channels
- South China Sea islands: limited tourist access
- Border regions: some require special permits — check in advance

- Personal crime (pickpocketing, assault) is very low by global standards
- Traffic: major road safety concern — use crossings carefully
- Food safety: cooked street food is generally safe; avoid raw salads in smaller cities
