China Travel Guide

Airlines in China

Domestic flights, key routes, and how to book — plus when the train is the better choice.

Choose domestic transport around the journey you want, not just the cheapest ticket. A flight can make a long cross-country leg practical, while a direct train may be easier when it avoids airport transfers and a change of planes. Compare the whole trip from one hotel to the next, including baggage, check-in, connections and the effect of a late arrival on your plans.

Major Chinese Carriers

Air China, China Eastern and China Southern are useful starting points for researching flights within China. Use the airline's own listing to confirm the operating carrier, airports and conditions for your actual travel dates; a booking platform's brand name alone does not tell you who operates the aircraft.

  • Check the operating airline when a flight has a codeshare number, and read the conditions attached to the fare you are buying.
  • For a connection, establish whether the journey is on one ticket, whether bags can be checked through and who assists if the first flight is delayed.
  • Request any accessibility assistance, child seating or special-meal arrangements through the airline's official channel before travel; availability needs confirmation.

Start with the official sites of Air China, China Eastern and China Southern, then check the route and fare details rather than assuming a general rule applies.

Key Domestic Routes

For a Beijing and Xi'an itinerary, or a Shanghai stay combined with nearby Jiangnan cities, compare direct trains with flights before deciding. For a longer move between eastern China and Yunnan, or between distant regions, investigate flights alongside the available rail alternatives. These are planning comparisons, not promises that a particular service operates on your dates.

Read the airport name and code carefully: a city can have more than one airport, and an unfamiliar arrival airport can change the transfer substantially. Compare arrival time at your hotel, not just flight duration. If the next day involves an important visit or a separately booked departure, build in a sensible buffer rather than making the entire itinerary depend on an on-time landing.

Booking Tips and Timing

Before paying, check that your name matches the travel document used for the booking and that the document details are entered correctly. Review checked and cabin baggage, seat selection, change and cancellation conditions, and any connection requiring you to collect and recheck luggage. Carry-on rules for batteries and other restricted items should be checked with the airline and departure airport.

There is no universally cheapest booking day or guaranteed low-fare window. Compare the total cost and flexibility once your route is workable. Keep booking references and receipts accessible offline, monitor the airline's official notifications, and reconfirm airport and terminal details before leaving for the airport. Avoid a tight self-transfer between separate tickets, especially before an international departure.
