Pottery & Ceramics Experience

Work with clay in a tradition that has shaped Chinese culture for seven millennia. From Jingdezhen porcelain to rustic tea ware — learn the craft at the source.

The Experience

What to Expect

China's ceramic heritage is unrivalled — this is, after all, where porcelain was invented. The city of Jingdezhen has been producing fine ceramics for over a thousand years, and its craft workshops remain active, living places where the old techniques are still taught and practised.

In this hands-on session, you will work directly with clay under the guidance of a craftsperson who has spent years perfecting their technique. Whether you choose the potter's wheel or hand-building, the focus is on experience and understanding — not on producing a perfect piece (though those happen too).

How the Day Unfolds

Every session is adapted to your group size and experience level. This is a typical structure — your guide will tailor it on the day.

01

Workshop Orientation

Your ceramicist explains the tradition of the studio — its history, the clay it uses, the kiln. You see examples of finished work at every skill level.

02

First Contact with Clay

Hands on the wheel, or clay on the table. The first session is about feeling the material — its weight, resistance, and responsiveness.

03

Your Piece Takes Shape

With guidance, you work toward a form: a cup, a small bowl, a tea container. Mistakes are part of the process — the master shows you how to read them.

04

Glazing & Finishing

You choose glazes and apply them. Discuss the firing process and what your piece will look like when cooled. Collection or delivery arranged.
