Health & Travel Insurance for China

Insurance, medication, documentation, and medical support preparation for a China journey.

Practical Guide

Health and travel insurance for China

Insurance for China is more specific than for other destinations. Standard travel insurance may not cover the major Chinese hospitals you would actually want to use. Get this right before you book.

Planning Decisions

Where standard travel insurance falls short for China

Coverage

Many policies exclude China or cap low

Cheaper US/UK policies may exclude mainland China entirely or cap medical at amounts insufficient for serious care. Read the policy schedule, not the marketing copy.

Hospital

International hospitals require upfront payment

Beijing United Family, Shanghai Parkway, and Raffles Beijing accept international insurance but often require upfront payment with later reimbursement. Carry a high-limit credit card.

Evacuation

Evacuation cover is essential outside Tier-1 cities

If you travel beyond Beijing/Shanghai (Tibet, Yunnan, rural Sichuan), evacuation cover to Hong Kong or Bangkok is critical. Standard 'medical only' policies do not include this.

Useful Details

What insurance buyers usually miss

Provider recommendations

For US/UK travelers: World Nomads (basic), Allianz Travel (mid), International SOS membership (premium). For high-coverage travelers: Cigna Global, Bupa Global. We do not earn commission; this is informational only.

Direct billing vs reimbursement

Direct billing means the hospital bills your insurer directly. Reimbursement means you pay first, file claim later. For non-trivial care in China, direct-billing networks matter more than coverage ceiling.

Trip cancellation cover

Useful for premium itineraries. Look for 'cancel for any reason' (CFAR) variants if visa or political conditions concern you. Standard policies require specific cancellation triggers.

Pre-existing condition waivers

Most US policies require purchase within 14-21 days of first trip deposit to waive pre-existing exclusions. Buy insurance the same day you confirm your itinerary deposit.

Checklist

Before insurance is locked

Three reads of the policy schedule, not the marketing page.

Verify China is in the country list

Some policies say 'worldwide except...' — confirm mainland China is included, not excluded. Hong Kong and Macau may be separate.

Verify your destinations are within the geographic limits

Some policies cap altitude (under 4000m). Tibet (Lhasa 3650m) is usually OK, but Everest Base Camp Tibet (5200m) often is not.

Note the 24/7 assistance hotline

Save the number in your phone before departure. Carry printed on paper. Some networks require the hotline approves treatment in advance.

Confirm sports/adventure activities are covered

Yangtze River cruise, Pearl River cruise, and standard sightseeing are fine. Bungee, paragliding, or motorcycle taxi need explicit add-on cover.

FAQ

Common questions about insurance

What hospital should I go to in an emergency?

Beijing United Family Hospital (Lido and Cancer Center), Shanghai Parkway Health, or Raffles Beijing for international-standard care. Outside these, head to the largest provincial hospital. We pre-load your insurance details with the guide.

Does ChinaTourly cover medical costs?

No — we are a travel planner, not an insurer. We require all guests to carry independent medical and trip insurance before final booking. We can recommend providers but do not endorse one specifically.

Can I buy insurance after arriving in China?

Practically no. Pre-existing condition waivers, trip cancellation, and many medical coverages require purchase before departure. Buy before, not after.
