For Shanghai, start with the time you actually have and the part of the city you want to understand. Architecture, neighbourhood history and food make different guiding briefs. A focused visit is usually easier to assess than a long list of landmarks with no travel time between them.

Ask whether the quote is for guiding alone or also includes a vehicle, tickets, meals and transfers. Confirm the meeting point, finish point, service duration and language in writing. A private guide cannot guarantee unrestricted access, avoid every queue or change a venue's entry rules.

If you want Suzhou or Hangzhou as well, treat the extra travel as a separate planning decision. Do not book a Shanghai city day and assume it covers an out-of-town excursion. For several destinations, a coordinated private itinerary may be more useful than arranging disconnected guiding days.
